BREEAM

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment’s Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading sustainability assessment method for projects, infrastructure and buildings and can be used to assess New Build, Refurbishment and In-Use projects.

BREEAM was created as a cost-effective means of bringing sustainable value to construction and development. It helps investors, developers, designers, construction teams and building occupiers to holistically address and manage the sustainability and efficiency of their project and it sets the standard for best practice in Sustainable Design & Construction.

Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) are now commonly requiring a minimum Level of BREEAM compliance as part of planning conditions as an easy, universal method of demonstrating overall compliance with wider policies.

A BREEAM Assessment is based on 10 categories, Energy, Water, Waste etc. and credits are awarded within the categories based on performance. These credits are then added together to produce an overall score and scaled as Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding. The process is detailed and often complex, with requirements far above and beyond those required as part of a standard construction project.

As such, early consideration is crucial to ensuring that your BREEAM requirements are integrated into the project and managed successfully throughout, to ensure that compliance is achieved.
